10:29 pm - New range available

baby_elvis
Australian designer Leona Edmiston has started up her online boutique, offering up to Australian size 24. The larger sizes are only offered in a very few styles at the moment, but the website says more will be coming in August. She does a lot of easycare, jersey pieces. There are two ranges, the more expensive one is made in Australia and costs AU$300+, and the cheaper range is made in China and seems to come in under AU$200.

6:41 pm - Sweet summer dresses - a by no means comprehensive report

herself_nyc
It's the time of year when thoughts turn to wearing very little, and the combo of a pull-over dress and sandals is most appealing.

I've found a couple of really lovely dresses.

J.Jill has the splendid linen dress in white or blush, in sizes up to a misses 20 (which fits a size 18W). They also offer it in plus sizes but as of this posting they were all gone except for sizes 14w, 16w, and 28w (this is very typical in plus sizes -- you can never catch a best-seller or a bargain unless you're either at the top end or the bottom end of the size spectrum). The linen pinch-pleat dress also looks great, and comes in 4 colors; I passed on it because the sleeve was barely there, but this is well worth a look for a lot of you -- very simple and easy. J.Jill has recently begun offering their whole line in plus-sizes, and right now they're having a buy 2 get a third free sale on camis, tanks and tees. They offer up to a 4x (28W).

At Woman Within, which mostly sells cheap crap, I found a nice little cotton trapeze dress with some pretty details -- a wide scoop neck with pintucking for shape, pockets, and a double hem. Unlike many such dresses, this has a little sleeve for those of us who like that kind of thing, and comes in 7 colors. I got one in white and was pleasantly surprised at how flattering and comfortable it was, for less than $25. It's available in sizes up to 6X.

Nordstrom always has a wide range of interesting dresses for plus sizes, such as this kind of retro belted floral, which I'd be all over if it wasn't sleeveless. While you're browsing there, don't forget to look at the tops in the Sweet Pea by Stacy Frati line, which are always unusual and eye-catching and sold nowhere else that I've ever been able to find. (They don't seem to have them in Nordstrom stores, just on the website.) I own a bunch of these, they're flattering and very easy to care for.

10:02 am - Alert for fans of the good-looking yet inexpensive & comfortable dress

herself_nyc
oldnavy.com now has some interesting plus size dresses (I'm wearing the blue patterned one today, which, ooooh, is on sale!), which may be exclusive to the website. Also check out the teal kimono style dress.

They're also running their 20% off everything on the site sale there now. And if you google oldnavy.com promo, you may find a code that'll get you free shipping too. If you have a credit card for Old Navy, Gap or Banana Republic, you get free shipping if you enter the word SPECIAL in the promo box (or maybe the code is FREESHIP, I forget, but you can google for that too). Do this after you enter the code for the 20% sale.

(See how easy I make it for you to be a compulsive online shopper just like yours truly?)

11:59 am - Big shoes for the stylish foot

herself_nyc
I've had such nice dealings with these people I'd like to get the word out. Barefoot Tess is a shoestore in Baltimore that specializes in very stylish shoes in large (and regular) sizes. They sell online at barefoottess.com, where they have shoes in sizes 5 to 14.

Their offerings are not cheap--they range from around $65 up to over $400 for some boots, but these are very on-trend shoes/boots from quality makers like Jeffrey Campbell that often haven't offered extended sizes before. The very kinds of shoes you'll see in Lucky and other fashion magazines are here in big sizes.

I've found the customer service, responsiveness and enthusiasm of the people at Barefoot Tess to be remarkable.

If you order from them and it comes up, say you referred by Herself in NYC. (Not that I get anything for this.)

8:02 pm - Dresses update

herself_nyc

I couldn't resist this stunner, it's gonna be my investment I-deserve-a-treat dress. See it here at Nordstrom's.

This dress would also work as a long tunic paired with jeans or leggings. From alight.com, here.

Lane Bryant has a drapey jersey cowl neck dress in 4 colors that looks like it would work for many of us.

2:03 pm - Boots

herself_nyc
Just a head's up for the larger-calved and/or footed amongst us. Target.com has a nice selection of cheapie but good looking boots up to size 12, including some Isaac Mizraahi boots that come in a wide-calf version (and are $36.99)

12:00 pm - Dresses!

herself_nyc
As we creep towards fall, I simultaneously think I Don't Need New Clothes This Season and DRESSES! GIMME DRESSES!.

So, my lovelies, let's find ourselves some dresses. The good kind, that celebrate the curves and the tits, not the tenty horrors that are everywhere when you can find a damn plus-size dress at all.

Some early possibilities:

From silhouettes.com:
This shirred knit dress, which looked nicer in the print catalogue in the raspberry color, seems like it would be comfortable and figure-flattering, and I'll probably try it in both colors.

This one too, may be a wee bit dramatic, but then I've never shied toom uch from drama in clothes.

From nordstrom.com:
Grey is a big color this season, and this dress is so feminine.

Exciting pattern on the ubiquitous wrap style.

I finally bought a pair of Spanx Higher Power Panties to try.

I was scared about spending 34 bucks on something I couldn't try on first, and that I couldn't return after opening.

It might be the best $34 I've spent in a long time.

here are some before and after shots )
Besides the great results, they're also REALLY comfortable. I forgot I had them on.

4:05 pm - Important news for UK fatshion_victims!

disgracelands
[info]treehavn left a post about the thorny topic of shirtdresses. They're very directional but very hard to wear.

But I have found a shirt-dress that is such a perfect frock that I expect it to completely change my life. And maybe bring about world peace too. That's the feeling I always have when I find a piece of clothing that fits beautifully and makes me feel beautiful too. Like, my whole life has been spent waiting for it to suddenly appear in my closet.

Image hosting by Photobucket

Oh, I know it looks blah on the model but in the flesh, it's a pretty polka dot number with piping and pin tucks that give it a 1940's feel. More importantly, it's made of a very heavy silky material (actually polyester and elastane but hey, I used to go clubbing in crimplene so man-made fibres bear no challenge to me) that skims and drapes rather than clings to every lump and bump like a lot of the shirt-dresses in the shops at the moment.

I'm 5'5" if I stand up really tall and this dress hits just on the knee so I can wear it over jeans. I'm inordinately hour-glassy, and this dress goes in where I go in and doesn't get stuck to my monumental arse.

Quite frankly, if this dress was a bloke then I'd marry it!

It's from Next, who now go up to a size 22. I've always avoided Next because they're a bit frumpy and I know that their stock policy is to actually be a season behind on the trends as their customers are not that fashion forwards, but I'm forced to eat my words.

It's also worth reminding UK-based fatshion victims that Dorothy Perkins and Monsoon both go up to a 22 and you can order these hard-to-find larger sizes online. Monsoon, in particular, are so generous in their cuts that you'll probably have to go down a size.

If you don't live in the UK, well it sucks to be you! Because us UK and non US girls can now buy also buy online from US sites that don't ship internationally. http://internationalcheckout.com is the interpipe's greatest secret. You can order from any online store in the States via the International Checkout and they'll ship it to you for a pretty reasonable handling fee.

Blimey. I'm so over-excited that I need to have a lie-down now...

current mood: ditzy

2:51 pm - Shirt Dresses

treehavn
Shirt dresses are supposed to be our friends this season, but has anyone had any experiences with finding cuts that flatter those with resolutely pear-shaped bodies? I'm not plus-sized, but I *am* shaped somewhat like a conference pear: narrow little shoulders, no bosom, but well-rounded hips and a sticky-out arse. Most of the shirt dresses I've tried on have either been too tight over the backside or too big around the boobs; it seems like they're better suited to straight up-and-down women or more hourglass shapes. Any pearls of wisdom? I suppose I could always wear them open over trousers (or jeans out of work), but it seems to defeat the purpose...

11:46 pm - Foundation garments and you. And me.

carolyn_claire
Hello, all. I've been enjoying the talk here very much, have learned some very helpful things, and so would like your input on the subject of foundation garments. I'll soon have an opportunity to shop with some in-the-know people who'll help me find styles to suit my particular challenges--I'm egg-shaped, with narrow, sloping shoulders, no waist to speak of and a large belly. Standing straight, shoulders back, and tucking the tummy in helps tremendously, of course, when I'm not too tired or achy or lazy to do it. What might also help me to look smoother and less bulgy around the middle and wear certain styles better is a good foundation garment, but I've never had any luck with those. I hate polyester against my skin, which is pretty much a given with this type of undergarment. I can't wear anything that cuts me at the waist, not only because I'd look like a marshmallow with a string tied around it, but I also get stomach aches if anything squeezes at all around the middle (as did my mother, though why that would be genetic, I don't know.) Something that would cause me to have to disrobe completely in order to pee is out of the question, being someone who really needs to go when she needs to go, and don't even talk to me about snaps or hooks at the crotch--they drive me crazy.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I entirely out of luck, here? What have your experiences with foundation garments been like? I certainly wouldn't want to wear one all the time, but for some occasions and some styles, I think it would be a confidence booster--as long as it isn't driving me crazy. If I could find a good one before I go on this shopping trip, it might open up some style possibilities for me that I otherwise might not have tried.

Or not--I'm someone who can barely handle wearing a bra, because it feels like a harness, to me, no matter how well fitted, and I never wear one at home. I'm all about natural fibers because I dislike the feel of synthetics so much, and I go barefoot at every opportunity and always have. Is it ridiculous to think that there might be an undergarment out there that was both restrictive enough to be helpful but not maddening for me to wear, even for short periods? Have you ever found such an underthing that you just loved? I'd love to hear about it.

11:02 am - I need a judgement call, ladies.

yin_again
Camo trousers?

I have a pair that I love - pinwale corduroy, low-rise, bootcut. They are comfortable and flattering.

However, is camo over? Was it ever on?

Wear 'em or trash 'em?

6:50 pm - Adorable dress alert

herself_nyc
This sweet vintage-type summer dress from alight.com is a charmer. Not cheap at $118, but it felt like a fair price for a dress made of a stiff heavy cotton, beautifully lined in a bright yellow cotton. You could wear it for day with flats and maybe a little cardigan, and for evening with high heeled sandals.

7:54 pm - Online shopping: Newport-News.com

herself_nyc
Tonight's topic: Newport News. This catalog/website has inexpensive clothes aimed at trendy young women. Their stuff is oftened features in the fash mags (and on the site you can see what's been in which magazines, which may interest you.)

Some offerings are a bit ... iffy, style-wise, but if you have a good eye, you can find lots of nice looking, very directional pieces for small sums, many made of natural fabrics. They offer plus sizes up to 26 in some things, and a great many of the misses sizes go up to an 18 or 20, useful if you're on the smaller side of the plus spectrum. (They also offer petites, jewelry, and lots of cute shoes up to a size 11.)

I just got this dress for spring, which has the myriad advantages of being: a) cotton, b) longish, and c) short-sleeved. I also received some other items I was happy with, since they were both trendy and not anything I could exactly find at Old Navy.

If you use code 606 at check out you'll get 15% off your order. Shipping in the US only, alas.

1:50 pm - Dresses!

herself_nyc
I'm seeing all the new spring stuff in the fash mags now, and it's all dresses dresses dresses for spring/summer. I adore dresses. But all the ones I see both in the magazines and on the plus-size websites are sleeveless.

I can't wear sleeveless anymore, because my upper arms are now so loose and flabby that it, uh, actually is sort of annoying how they flap when I comb my hair. I mean, if the sensation annoys me when I'm alone in my bathroom, I really can't work my arms in public. This is the only spot where I'd consider plastic surgery except that I totally don't want to pay for and recover from plastic surgery, so that's out of the question. Don't tell me that weight lifting and time may help--maybe a bit, but we're talking major arm-jowls here.

Which brings me to this: I'm putting out an APB on fashionable dresses for spring with short sleeves. If you see one anywhere, please post a link or a directive in this community. Especially if it's a white dress and/or made of a naturally-occurring fabric.

I imagine I will buy a couple of sleeveless dresses and wear little shrugs or cardies over them but damnit I want to free not to layer!

8:52 pm - B and Lu

herself_nyc
Their quality is a bit of a crapshoot, but B and Lu have just redesigned their website and introduced some adorable new styles. Their stuff is very youthful and urban, of an ilk not often seen in plus size clothes, and the prices aren't outrageous. In my dealings with them, they've been very responsive, even when I had to return things that were shoddily made. Worth a look and worth an order, since things can always be returned. They're a small business, and it feels good to support that.
